There are a lot of different reasons, but these are the main ones that keep coming up:
1. Flagrant unrealism. Weird thing to complain about in a cartoon, but people seem to have an ocean's worth of blood in their body, as well as sharp insight that normally eludes most people fighting battles in real life. People get bored of clashes of titans, hard as it is to believe. 2. The character design in most anime is uninspired at best. You can especially see this in stuff like Gundam SEED where characters only seem to be differentiated by the color of their hair. People tend to lose interest quickly when they can't tell other people apart. 3. The dialogue in anime tends to be stilted by English-speaking standards. Japanese people talk a lot about ideals and about their state of mind (this is unique to anime, and not really present in day-to-day life), as well as focus a great deal on being polite to the point where lack of politeness is a great insult (this *does* exist in real life in Japan). English speakers, Americans in particular, would rather that their characters "get to the point". 4. The Western fanbase of anime is frightening, to say the least. To outsider's eyes, they seem obsessed with a culture that is not theirs, to the absence of more important things such as hygiene and survival. It's not a really valid complaint about anime per se, but it is something that keeps certain people from admitting they like the stuff. |

Here's why a lot of people I know hate anime: the fans. explanation given:
A lot of the people who are anime fans like announcing it or proving it a lot. They give each other Japanese nicknames e.g. "Zabe" they try dressing like the characters or acting like the characters. They also tend to be very loud and seemingly immature (but that's just how the extreme anime fan acts). They obsess over J-Rock or J-Pop or anything Japanese. They brag about owning swords. They try to randomly use Japanese words in their every day speech. They talk about how they want to move to Japan a lot or how a certain anime character is hot. They draw it a lot and some even draw their own make-shift anime porn. The younger ones try too hard to be random or cute and most commonly say "___ of doom!" "___ will take over the world!". While the older guys try to be cool or similar to male character. They write fanfics about the anime and the majority are "yaoi". They complain about whatever country they live in and glorify Japan. If a western tv show is loosely similar to a certain anime (no matter how good the western show is) automatically the anime is better. They lie about being part Japanese or living in Japan for a time but having to move to America or where ever they currently live. Some lie about their childhood or experiences in order to seem dramatic and to fit in with some characters. Online they commonly and overly type, XD, ^_^, =^_^=, @_@, o.O and other variations. But besides the "randomness", the drawings and the names...they're just pretty damn weird. And when people see them and realize that, they tend to avoid it and criticise it. The fans wonder why they or anime is trashed talked or looked down upon and what they don't always seem to realize is ....they brought it on themselves. Yeah don't bitch at me or whatever, that's just what people have said when the subject of anime came up or a certain person came up. Quote:

I don't really care if people don't like anime, its just when people who dislike it, also dislike ANYONE who likes it, even if its just a little, and they hate it so much that anyone with a postive opinion of it, should be shot because of something they like.
Which is strange, because you could easily say that about anything one of those people like, then they'd be in the same place... |

Most anime haters tend to generalize anime based on the early ones that came to America/other countries; Sailor Moon, Gundam, Dragon Ball... A lot of anime did come from one of those three so when most people see any anime, they directly connect it to one of the three. If it's girly, Sailor Moon. If it's robots, Gundam. If it's action, Dragon Ball.
A lot of stupid anime (Naruto) gets big on a channel, eventually being the main thing on the channel. (Naruto.) When people keep seeing this anime (Naruto.) over and over, they start to hate anime in general. (Naruto.) If you saw the Got Milk commercial constantly, you'd hate it too. Especially if it was dumb. (Naruto.) It's a cartoon. Not everyone loves cartoons. Everyone wants to "get old quick" so they jump straight from cartoons to real life shows. (High School Musical I'm looking at you.) They hate animation right off the bat. Lots of rip-off anime shows like Xiaolion Showdown or Teen Titans come out. Again, stupid shows seen constantly, only these are REALLY stupid. |

Your examples of rip-off shows are bad dude. Showdown and especially Teen Titans were (Idon't believe I have to say WERE now...) pretty good anime knock offs. You need to go with Totally Spies, Ben 10 (hell in Ben 10 they had Konohamaru and his pose in the show), and W.I.T.C.H., those are terrible.

I think people who says that anime sucks say it just because they want to feel more "mature". Curius how the same people tends to watch "the Simpsons" or "South park" just because those cartoons are more socialy accepted. Usualy they take a defensive position when i mention that... Also, and they usualy don´t admit it, they watch old animes like Captain Tsubasa or Saint Seiya (for the old times) more than one has asked me for the "hades ovas". Other "anime haters" think on animes and video games as violent things that turn they children into murderers or something... anything to avoid the responsability of being a parent and the fact that they should have watched and educated their childrens and not the let all the work to the tv, the teletubbies and 4kids. (no wonder their childrens become stupids ¬_¬) There is another faction that does not hate the anime, just hate the people who watch anime. (otakus where previusly discrived in this thread y belive) As for the diferences betwen anime and cartoons there are many... i like both though. i like the super heroes concept, but i also like the normal people into weird shit concept. (i like this last one better though... but that´s me) I don´t know... there are lots of reasons for someone to like or not an anime... just as to like or not a movie, a game or anything elase. |

That's not odd, that's a good majority of people's thoughts. Animated shows are for kids and shouldn't be bothered with. There are many different takes on why people hate anime, and hating toons in general is a big one.
Another is a thought that all anime is pornographic, that's a much bigger issue than anyone thought it would be. Sailor Moon and DBZ sparked a massive generation of famous hentai sites that can be found on searches from Google or anywhere. Parents see it and are "My kid has been watching this?!?!" and of course they haven't but parents are truely idiots. From this to video games, parents feel the need to pass their ignorance and stupidity onto the easiest for of media for doing so.......video games and cartoons. (It was comic books, but that passed over and now it's this) |

In the UK during the 80's, for a long time Anime and Manga were considered the ultimate in sleazy, and the ultimate breach of censorship. Why? Well companies decided that they'd market anime as 'adult cartoons', so they released movies like Violence Jack and the infamous Legend of the Overfiend. These shocked the general public and not only tainted them against anime, but actually lowered their opinion of Japan all together. It also created the infamous tagline for anime:
"Ban this sick filth!" It's a relief that now in the 21st century anime has more or less grown out this image. We now have expos, and a growing fanbase for anime, plus a 4-show programming block; Anime Network. But even in this modern age people who are outside anime still are revolted by it's name, and whenever they see anything as low as a sexual innuendo in anime they feel repulsed, so what if it's a cartoon? You see worse in movies! I was scrolling the internet and came across this newspaper headline: <img src='http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v228/Prodigis/dailymail.jpg' border='0' /> I've only read a few volumes of psychic academy, but I would guess that the writer is overdoing the flaming a little. Clearly, to gain a good reputation in the West, manga and anime still have a long way to go, as all 4kids attempts at censoring anime have done is make the new generations see anime as 'kids cartoons from Japan'. |

A lot of people I know think that anime is just for perverts who like staring at 2 dimensional women parts. I showed a friend that second opening of Death Note, and he said that I was perverted for watching that kind of stuff. -_- People need to understand the different forms of anime and that they can't all be slupped into either "kid" or "hentai".

I've known people to just hate anime because it's popular; the anticonformist way of life, which in my opinion, is a joke. People being 100% negative because they think it makes them look cool, or it makes them feel good...
Along with the reasons Danny posted, another reason I frequently hear is "because it sucks". |

Guys, the "I hate" stuff happens to EVERYTHING in the west.
First it was books. Not so much since parents grew up on books. Then it was movies. Comics. Music. (Big one, still going on.) TV. Video games. Internet. Happens to everything. People feel real unbalanced on subjects and when ever something bad happens, they tip the balance greatly. |

I guess people in america think that anime is to unrealistic (but then again, american animations are almost just as unrealistic as anime =/ ) Or they're probably jeolous that anime is more popular than most american animation.

See, thats the fan-boy/girl thought of the subject. Truth is, America doesn't hate anime any more than cartoons in general. It's just that most anime takes place in JAPAN. You know, where the laws are different and people act different? We don't need TWO Japans. One is annoying enough. Kids learn a lot from television. I already have an autistic kid at my school who acts like Naruto; he believes in chakra and everything. I hate this kid because he thinks he's all that and that he can do anything: LIKE FREAKING NARUTO. This would be the exact same if he grew up on cartoons (not anime) and watched a cartoon about ninjas flying around with all the same courses.
Besides that, Americans like to have their drama set in a more realistic enviorment, with real people. Yeah some cool animation can be thrown in there but America has grown up with the thoughtthat cartoons are childish. Cartoons were made for kids when they came out, of course adults are going to look down at them. And don't say, "LAWL AMERICA IS SO SELF CENTERED" because you're just as self-centered you hyped-up anime fans. They, the "non-anime Americans" look at you like self-centered kids who don't want to leave fantasies behind. When was the last time you saw a cartoon hit the WORLD, that had a story, had characters, was basically an anime but in a more western animation. When? There weren't. People look down at cartoons here, kids. No one takes cartoons seriously here. And oh god, TooMuchAnime, that is probably the most ANNOYING thing I have ever seen. Ever. Ben 10 and Naruto. That's like saying Puke and Farts. Seriously, can someone please tell Cartoon Network to stop sucking Naruto's dick? They have a marathon about Naruto every other freaking week. I've yet to see a Bo-bobo marathon or a One Piece marathon on CN. BUT NOW THEY HAVE IT ON BEN 10 JUST GRAND. |

Well that's an attack if I've ever seen one, not on me either just at everything. and it's "2muchanime" okay.
I'm not even going to go after 3/4 of whyat you said, BUT for 75% of their shows Cartoon Network ONLY airs the shows, not makes them, the writers and animators may not have anything to do with CN in general, whicch is the case for Ben10, whoever made that episode likes Naruto. 2nd, CN is marathoning Naruto for F*CKING reason, so shove it in your mouth and your Naruto hating ways, all haters on anything need to be quiet, stay open to anything and everything and think clearly, otherwise all of your thoughts on something that YOU HATE is void for being completely biased and doesn't hold up in any argument you ever want to have.. Every marathon gives them a reason for 2 new episodes, which is because they're trying to get to the highest rated Naruto season ever, that Sasuke Retrieval Arc, where Naruto gets it's one and only gold medal for doing something right. AND so they can get through 5 seasons of Filler without Toonami's ratings dropping too far. ANother thing, Toonami and Adult Swim have complete control over their shows, CN is only the channel it shows on, so they can't do anything about Toonami's marathons. Now the 9 o'clock showing sure, but not Toonami. Also, there's no One Piece marathon because 4kids dropped the show and are waiting for FUNimation to do whatever and Bobobo sucks in comparison to both of these and wouldn't do well for the ratings anyway. |

OK. Hang on. Replace Cartoon Network with Toonami, though I'm sure Cartoon Network isn't too much different.
All I'm saying is that there are too many Naruto marathons. Thats basically the only reason someone would watch Naruto now. If they want to promote a season, fine, but they don't need to ALWAYS get in the way of everything else they have. I do watch the One Piece dub mainly for laughs (It's more of a parody now.) and Bo-bobo is still a good show nonetheless. They air an episode every freaking day, probably two, I don't know, I don't watch Cartoon Network that much anymore, and every month theres a Naruto marathon. I'd much rather watch a variety of shows then three hours of crap. And anyone who watches Naruto has seen every god dang episode (Mainly due to replays but also due to fandom.) so I don't think they really need to refresh you on anything. |

That's where you're wrong, a large majority of the people who watch Naruto on Cartoon Network have NOT seen it it already. The target audience for this show here is still young teens who probably don't have much authority over a computer to watch them all the time. And once a month isn't that bad, especially for the ratings on the channel.
Ratings come first man, and Naruto has the most because it is the best show on Toonami as of now, One Piece is a MUCH better show, but the dub is just so incredibly bad it's basically a parody as you said, making it crap now. Bobobo is most definately NOT a good show with the dub, SO much dialogue was changed in it, IT is also a parody of what it once was, and it was a comedy that made fun of everything to begin with, which is terrible. Teen Titans is old, and GX I don't need to explain, Storm Hawks is also terrible (looked so good on the trailers too). So in fact Naruto is the best on there, so a marathon of Naruto is a marathon of genius. And like I said, shut up on the Naruto hating, Naruto is FAR from crap and is better than 90% of what's on CN anyway. I mean the only GOOD CN made cartoon on there is Billy and Mandy, other shows worth mentioning Code Lyoko, which is decent at best and Pokemon which will always be a highly watched show, so Naruto being on during the weekdays is a safe haven for all the shit that's on there now. And Adult Swim is still doing nicely with it's shows, so no need to go into that. Where the HELL is Zatch Bell??!?! God that show was awesome, I mean sure I can go torrent Goshiken no Gash Bell, but I liked the dub, it was also better than most stuff on Toonami. |

You know, let's just stick to anime haters. We've moved from that to ratings.
This whole topic is based on anime-fanism. I'm sure if there was a topic called "Why do people like anime?" and the first post was, "Cause the only good shows come from Japan? =/ " we'd get completely opposite views. No, I'm not going to make said topic, but it's worth mentioning. I don't hate anime in general, but I hate most anime that comes out. Same story (A lone samurai must take care of some girl while fighting demons.), same characters (Lone samurai has several scars, likes ramen, and he's stupid to boot.), and bad art. (Samurai has many scars, mainly on his face, long, strange colored hair, and big anime eyes. The girl looks just like every other girl, except her voice.) An anime has to be different for me to like it, which is why I like One Piece. Yeah Luffy is basically like the samurai, but you can at least tell him apart from every other character. Even the female characters. |

You COMLETELY changed everything we were talking about. I never called you an Anime Hater, just a Naruto Hater, because we're on the topic of Naruto at the moment.
Anyone who says "The only good anything is from this certain place" is a weak minded or linear minded individual who won't open up to anything else, because every country has SOMETHING good about it coming out of it. And again, if you're going to complain about something, doit to everything that does it, in this sense, your "Same old Same old" anime routine is the same with EVERY form of ENTERTAINMENT from live action to video games, everything has it. And teh best apart about this is that anime is thought about as toons, when in fact it needs to be thought about as just television for something like this, like almost everything with a story on OUR TV, anime has a counterpart for it...+ more or - less, it all depends. One Piece is different? No, by no means is it. One Piece's basic story is the same as Outlaw Stars story, if you want to break things down, almost everything has something just like it but stylized different. You based your little thing for One Piece just on the fact that Luffy looks different then other characters and the girls? Of course, a shounen anime almost always does a good job at making their designs look different from generic eye design and generic hair design (as is with Naruto, and Hunter Hunter), but EVERY female character between 15-40 has the same charcter design in One Piece. Put some different clothes on her and different hair, change eye color and Voiala!! Same with anything from Leiji Matsumoto (Harlock Saga, Interstellar 555) all the girls look the same, there's an old man character design that appears in every one, and a character that always looks like Harlock and one for the boy from Queen Emeraldes.......veering off topic...but Matsumoto's designs in general are different fom others. Anime has a certain style from it that can't be changed much otherwise it would lose it's effect. (Did you know that the first anime chracters were created from Mickey Mouse? Big eyes, small mouth) and that's how it's been (except for shounen series). Which is why you will see a lot of the same looking faces in anime, but you HAVE to see through that for clothing design which differs and weapons or attitudes with the design, otherwise you'll be stuck with bad interperatation for a long time. /end |
