So a freind of mine was trying to get me to read Eragon and this was what I thought as he was explaining the book.
"So it takes place in a time where everyone is in fear of a tyranical government (The Empire) and this farm boy (Luke) finds this magical egg (R2D2) that connects him to this old hermit who is really good at fighting (Obi-Wan) who tells him he is a descendant of a group of people that were wiped out a long time ago (the Jedi). Because he found the egg and met the old-guy, he now has special powers (the force). Also, the the bad guy, who used to be a good guy (Dath Vader) betrayed and killed all the people with the special powers (the Sith killing all the Jedi, I think it's called The Purge in the expanded universe)." Anyways, what do you think? Did I get it right or is the book totally different from what I interpreted it as? |

Oh, believe me, you haven't been the first one to figure that one out.

sci fi hobbit parody I'd read that one i get down with the 12 other books I'm trying to read right now.
Joseph Campbell's universal "hero's journey" I happen to think that splash page show how easy it is to have some overlap with fictional hero stories. |

Actually, Eragon reminds me more of Lord of the Rings
and since I hated LOTR, that's probably why I gave up on Eragon so quickly :/ |

WHAT!!!!!!!!!! How could you hate LOTR?!?!?!?!?!?
Back to the topic at hand... Yeah, Eragon kinda steals from many places... but isn't Star Wars itself just a western set in space? ... think about it. |

I would actually say Star Wars is taken from lot of historical events of modern age, from Cold War to rise of Hitler and fall of British empire
[ PS notice how he changed Eragons father, does anyone else feel this is a somewhat clumsy effort to right and remove the S-W tag, ] |

It's true that Eragon is similar to Star Wars in a number of ways. But to say that Star Wars was completely 100% original is a bit naive.
Besides, when you get to the third book of the Eragon series, it drifts from the "Star Wars" feel of it. It's by no means a fantastic series or anything, but an old argument is old. |

Yeah, Twilight and Eragon are about on the same level for me (except I think that Eragon is better, although unnecessarily difficult to read IMO)
