Default Umineko no Naku Koro Ni: The Forum Game

“When the seagulls cry, there are no survivors”

This game is not like your usual, here, your beloved GM is now your opponent.
Make it an utmost priority to read through the rules thoroughly.

How to Play:
 
This game is to be played with a minimum of 2 players and a maximum of 20 players including the Game Master (GM)

Every turn several murders occur until all 18 characters on the “Game Board” inevitably die in seemingly humanly impossible ways. It is the players’ jobs to discover as much information as possible while everyone is alive and decide on a certain verdict that they must argue in order to rebut the GM’s claim. The players must come up with ways that the murders could have been possible through methods which the GM has intentionally left hidden. (See GM Objectives) The game ends at the resignation of all players or when the GM has been proven wrong during the Meta Phase when all 18-19 humans have been eliminated. When the game has ended, the “Tea Party” is initiated for several days in order to discuss possible errors, suggestions or the round in general.
Every turn is separated into two phases, The Game Board Phase and The Meta Phase.


The Game Board Phase:
 
This is when new murders are discovered. Here, living players may move throughout the mansions rooms as listed by the GM or question other living characters, it is the Game Master’s duty to answer the question as the game piece that has been questioned, for example:

(Player) animex75: I question Nanjo, “Where were you at the time of the murder?”
(GM) Bakura136: Nanjo replies “I was with the master and Genji within the study.”
The information received may be interpreted in whatever way the player wishes, additionally the GM is not obligated to give the truth during Game Board phase, the character that is being questioned is able to refuse to answer a certain question, lie, or tell the complete truth to the extent of their own knowledge. If a game piece is killed, they may not be questioned, if a player’s piece is killed, they may no longer question anyone or use their role’s game board exclusive ability. Once Game Board phase has ended, no more questions may be asked until the next turn.
The number of victims per GB Phase are determined by the GM and may vary between 1 and 5, however, the first turn must include 6 murders and the second must include 2. A corpse does not have to be found for every victim. There must be at least 2 humans alive during the last turn before they are inevitably killed off. The GM writes a summary of where and when every corpse was discovered at the end of the final Game Board phase with the exception of the final victims whose corpses are not to be found but are considered dead.
Game Board phase ends when all necessary clues are discovered.


The Meta Phase:
 
Here is when discussion on the murders that occurred in The Game Board phase happen. This phase lasts 12 hours, unless abilities are used to shorten or lengthen the time limit. Here the players must question and debate with the GM themselves by using what is known as Bold and Highlighted truths.

The Red Truth: (Highlighted)
 
The truth and nothing but the truth commonly used by the GM, this is used to disprove theories and conjecture placed by the players but additionally for the players to recall already stated facts. The GM does not hold the burden of proof, however, the players must use their own evidence to support the use of the red text. Additionally, the GM is not obligated to use the red text when prompted.


The Bold Truth:
 
Commonly used by players to set forth a statement that supports their theory. In order for Bold Text to be used, it must support your testimony.
This text is the truth unless said otherwise by the GM using the red text. If the GM fails to disprove the statement, it becomes absolute truth and the player is considered to have solved that murder. The GM is able to use the bold text to supply possibilities as to how their opponent’s bold truth is not effective.


The Ultimate Truth: (Bolded, Highlighted and Underlined)
 
This is effectively a “finishing move” used primarily by the GM and very rarely by other players when they have debunked all bold truths with their own bold truths and possible red truths. This is a concluding statement used to establish the winning testimony at the end of a meta phase. This is able to be used to wipe out other players depending on the role of the player using it. (See Battler Ushiromiya)


An example of the first two texts being used would be similar to the following:

The Roles:
Each player is given one role by the GM (one of which is chosen by the GM for themselves), each role has at least one GB Phase ability, one Meta Phase ability and one GM Objective. These abilities are PMed to the GM.

Witches:
- These characters are the main controllers of Meta Phase, they are able to either hinder or support both the GM or the players but they are not able to directly influence the game board pieces.
- They do not physically exist on the game board, but are given special abilities, as such, they cannot die. (See Beatrice for exceptions)
- If this game functions regularly, more witches and demons will be added

Beatrice: “It’s PAFEKTO!”
 
Game Board Phase:
If Yasu is in play, Beatrice is able to create a human game piece in her image to appear on the game board as a mysterious and apparent 19th guest. Beatrice is able to place letters in any room of their choosing, detailed with instructions for the living characters or keys to any room. She is able to give one to Maria, Rosa or the servants directly in order to ensure these messages are seen. She can only be seen by characters controlled by the GM, the servants, Maria or Rosa. (Human!Beatrice does not have to be the true culprit, See Yasu)
Meta Phase:
By PMing the GM, she is able to learn the exact number of people on the island, she is able to state the exact number in red at any time after learning this information. (See Tips and Hints)
GM Objective:
If Beatrice is the GM, players must prove that the murders committed were not done through the use of magic.


Virgilia: “Try to remember what a beautiful form you once had.”
 
Game Board Phase:
Once per turn, Virgilia is able to stop anyone from being killed.
Meta Phase:
By PMing the GM, Virgilia is told the name of a character who is not the true culprit, she is able to announce this in red whenever she wishes after learning this information. (See Tips and Hints)
GM Objective:
If Virgilia is the GM, the players must deduce who each and every witch and fantasy character on the board represents I.E If the GM states that Ronove and Virgilia are in the study at the same time as Genji and Kumasawa, it can be theorised that Ronove represents Genji and Virgilia represents Kumasawa. How the murders are committed must still be solved, but it is possible that there are multiple culprits and/or accomplices.


EVA-Beatrice: “Why don’t you just give up and die!?”
NOTE: Not to be confused with Eva Ushiromiya
 
Game Board Phase:
Once per round, by PMing the GM, Eva-Beatrice is able to force the GM to establish an alibi for the true culprit, EVA-Beatrice is not told who is being ensured an alibi. (See Tips and Hints)
Meta Phase:
By PMing the GM, EVA-Beatrice is told the alibis of one character who is not the detective or the true culprit every turn, she does not get to choose whose alibi is revealed to them and she is able to reveal the information in red whenever she wishes after she is told it.
GM Objective:
If EVA-Beatrice is the GM, the players must try to prove that Eva Ushiromiya is not the only person able to commit the murders. NOTE: There may be multiple killers.


Bernkastel: “I intend to enjoy this endless tale.”
 

Game Board Phase:
Once per game, Bern is able to halve the time until Meta Phase ends. If Ange uses her ability the time returns to normal. This ability can not be used in the final meta phase.
Meta Phase:
Bernkastel is able to place a bet on whether or not the GM will be beaten, if she is correct, Lambdadelta will be the GM of the next round. If she is incorrect, neither her nor Lambda will be in play in the next game.



Lambdadelta: “As the witch of certainty I hereby declare, that a miracle will not occur.”
 
Game Board Phase:
Lambdadelta is able to guarantee the death of one person, this does not affect the goat head vote.
Meta Phase:
Lambdadelta is able to guess who the true culprit is, if she is correct, she wins the game, however she is only able to guess once and her victory is only announced at the very end of the game, once she wins she is able to choose what role the GM will be next game, Bernkastel and Lambda are excluded however. If she is incorrect neither her nor Bern will be in the following game.
GM Objective:
If Lambdadelta is the GM, Beatrice is not allowed to be used and Natsuhi is never allowed an alibi on the game-board. The goal is to prove Natsuhi is not the culprit.


ANGE-Beatrice: “Come back quickly big brother.”
NOTE: Not to be confused with Ange Ushiromiya
 

Game Board Phase:
Once a round, ANGE can resurrect a dead player as another living character not already controlled by a player
Meta Phase:
Once per turn, Ange can extend Meta Phase for one more hour, if Bern has used her ability, the time limit returns to normal. This ability can be used in the final Meta Phase.


Ronove: “Pukuku”
 
Game Board Phase:
Every time the life processes of a body ends, Ronove is privately messaged what time the body’s life ended. He is not told anything other than the times in which people are killed, including the names of the deceased.
Meta Phase:
Once per round, By PMing the GM, Ronove can stop any of the witches from using their abilities for the Meta Phase he uses this ability and the following game board phase. The information on when someone is killed is delayed until the next turn.

Humans:
- Humans are the most influential people in terms of recovering information or challenging the witches.
- Most humans exist on the game-board but most do not have meta phase exclusive abilities or GM objectives.
- There are a potential two other humans I can include if the game functions regularly

The Ushiromiya Family
- All of the Ushiromiya family (except Kinzo) must be on the game-board, all characters not controlled by players are controlled by the GM, the GM may also use their respective game-board abilities.

Battler Ushiromiya: “No good, no good at all!”
 
Game Board Phase:
Battler is given immunity permanently on the game board.
Meta Phase:
Once per turn, Battler can force the GM to repeat a statement in Red, if the GM is unable to due to the statement being false, he can try again until the Red Truth is used.
GM Objective: If the GM chooses to be Battler Ushiromiya, he replaces Beatrice as the culprit, players must prove that Battler did not commit the crimes.


Kinzo Ushiromiya: “Oh.... BEEEAATTOOORRIIIICHHHEEEEE~!”
 
- Kinzo can not move from the study unless any characters other than the servants, Natsuhi or Krauss have entered the room.
- Kinzo can only appear in front of the servants, Natsuhi and Krauss whilst alive.
- Kinzo can not be the True Culprit
- Kinzo does not need to be on the Game Board every game.
- If you didn’t get the picture already: Kinzo is dead before the start of every game, however, he is not considered dead until his body is discovered. Kihihihi~!
- If Yasu is the GM, the above rules do not apply.
Game Board Phase:
Every turn, Kinzo is able to guess who one of the next sacrifices will be, if he is right, he can avoid having his body discovered for one round. If he is wrong however, his body will be found the next turn. (If Yasu is the GM, he simply avoids death.)
Meta Phase:
Kinzo is told if anyone has solved the riddle of the epitaph, he is able to announce who has in red, revealing who is the official “Kinzo” or “Head of the Ushiromiya Family.”
GM Objective:
If Kinzo is the GM, players must prove that Kinzo is dead and was not able to commit the murders. On the game-board, Kinzo is given the title of GOLDSMITH.


Krauss Ushiromiya: “Moon Tourism! What could go wrong!?"
 
Game Board Phase:
- Within the first turn, Krauss is able to claim the title of Kinzo, the head of the Ushiromiya family, revealing Kinzo’s death. This allows Krauss to steal Kinzo’s ability in order to avoid death, however, if he guesses wrong he will become one of the sacrifices the following turn. This title is removed if anyone solves the riddle of the epitaph.


Natsuhi Ushiromiya: “I’ve got a headache.”
 
Game Board Phase:
Once per round, Natsuhi is able to kick all servants out of the room she is in.
Meta Phase:
By PMing the GM, Natushi is able to force the GM not to guarantee the death of one person in red.


Jessica Ushiromiya: “Tsurupetan~!”
 
- If Yasu is the true culprit, Jessica cannot die until Kanon does.
Game Board Phase:
If Kanon is still alive, Jessica is able to PM the GM to die in place of Kanon on the turn in which he dies. By doing this, Jessica will call Battler before she dies, revealing one clue about the culprit. (This ability overrides her immunity)


Eva Ushiromiya: “Shut up, you whore!”
 
Game Board Phase:
- By PMing the GM, Eva is able to place a piece of paper in the door crack of any one room, the player is told immediately when this piece of paper hits the floor.
- If Eva can solve the riddle of the epitaph, she will not die and become the only survivor of the Rokkenjima incident.
- If Krauss, Rosa and Rudolf are already dead, the answer to the riddle will be given to her automatically.


Hideyoshi Ushiromiya: “WOULD’YA GIVE IT A REST, EVA!?”
 
Game Board Phase:
By PMing the GM, Hideyoshi is able to remain with Eva the entire game until either one of them dies, providing an alibi.

George Ushiromiya: “Tomitake flash!”
 
- If Yasu is the true culprit, George cannot die until Shannon does.
Game Board Phase:
If Shannon is still alive, George is able to PM the GM to replace Shannon with someone else on the turn in which she dies. George and Shannon will both die the turn afterwards.


Rudolf Ushiromiya: “I am Jack Bauer!”
 
- Rudolf and Kyrie will always die together.
Game Board Phase:
- Rudolf does not need to use the door in order to enter a room, he is able to break the window to get through, however, he can only break one window, this window will remain open for the rest of the game.
- If Krauss, Eva and Rosa are dead, Rudolf (and Kyrie) will survive until the end of the game.


Kyrie Ushiromiya: “Turn the chessboard around...”
 
- Rudolf and Kyrie will always die together.
Game Board Phase:
Upon death, by PMing the GM, Kyrie is able to leave a message stating something that is NOT TRUE about the true culprit.


Ange Ushiromiya: “See you again, have a nice day.”
 
- Ange is not on the game-board but she has game-board exclusive abilities.
Game Board Phase:
Ange is able to make one character live until the end of the game, however, by doing this she removes Battler’s immunity.
Meta Phase:
Once per game, Ange is able to temporarily resurrect one character which will recount what they saw and heard moments before their death, names will not be included.


Rosa Ushiromiya: “Lay a finger on my daughter and I’ll show you how cold your hell is.”
 
Game Board Phase:
- Rosa is able to force the servants to give her all keys on their possession, any keys found elsewhere from then on are given to Rosa.
- If Rosa can solve the riddle of the epitaph before Eva does, Eva will be denied immunity and will die if she solves the riddle afterwards.
- If Rudolf, Eva and Krauss are dead, Rosa will be able to kick one person out of the room she is in every turn.
- Every other turn, Rosa is able to beat Maria for erratic behaviour, this prevents Maria from using her abilities for one turn.
- Rosa is able to save Maria from being a sacrifice up to three turns, the turn following the third save, Rosa and Maria will die together.
Meta Phase:
If Rosa dies alongside Maria, the GM will not be allowed to confirm their certain death, regardless of whether or not they really are dead.


Maria Ushiromiya: “Uu! Uuu! U~! Uuu~! Beatrice exists!”
 
- At the start of every game, Maria will present a letter revealing the riddle of the game. (See The Riddle of the Epitaph)
Game Board Phase:
By sending a PM to the GM, Maria is able to steal and hide the location of one key.
Meta Phase:
Maria is able to force the GM to state if any characters other than Yasu have multiple personalities.


Servants
- Servants are important for gaining an idea on who and who not to suspect.
- The group “servants” applies to all servants with the exception of Yasu if s/he is in play.
- All servants are given keys to the rooms of the mansion with the exception of Kinzo’s study, Genji is the only servant that holds the key to Kinzo’s study. All other keys held by the servants are determined by the GM.

Yasu Ushiromiya: “I am one yet many!”
 
- Yasu is the only role that is hidden amongst the players, therefore s/he is regarded as a secondary role.
- Yasu is one single body but embodies two or three personalities.
- The personalities of Yasu are given to two different players whereas the role of Yasu is given to another player. As such, Yasu has abilities over their personas.
- If Yasu is not the true culprit and one of their personalities is killed, all other personalities are killed, in which case the bodies of the other personalities that were not killed go missing.
- Yasu does not have to be in play, in which case Kanon and Shannon are given bodies of their own.
- If the deaths of either of Yasu’s personalities are caused by their powers, their deaths will be faked.
Game Board Phase:
Yasu is able to fake the deaths of Shannon and/or Kanon regardless of whether or not they are the true culprit.
Meta Phase:
By PMing the GM, the GM will announce publicly one piece of evidence that has been missed within one of the rooms I.E a key or note etc. This can only be used once per game.

- The personalities of Yasu include:
Shannon/Sayo: “Why was I given a heart that loves?”
 
Game Board Phase:
If George is still alive, Shannon is able to PM the GM to die in place of George on the turn in which he dies. By doing this, Shannon will call Battler before she dies, revealing one clue about the culprit.

Kanon/Yoshiya: “I am only furniture.”
 
Game Board Phase:
If Jessica is still alive, Kanon is able to PM the GM to replace Jessica with someone else on the turn in which she dies. Jessica and Kanon will both die the turn afterwards.


Genji Ronoue: “It has been an honour.”
 
Game Board Phase:
- If Genji is alone, he will not die.
- On the turn before Genji’s death, Genji is able to PM the GM to kill another Servant alongside him.


Kumasawa Chiyo: “The mackerel did it!”
 
Game Board Phase:
Once per round, Kumasawa is able to prevent any servants from dying, the following turn, Kumasawa and Genji will die.


Gohda Toshiro: “UUUWAAAAAAAAHHHHH!”
 
Game Board Phase:
Once per round, Gohda is able to prevent any of the servants from using their abilities for one turn, the following turn, he will be killed.


Nanjo Terumasa: “I’d estimate you only have nine months, friend.”
 
- Nanjo is not actually a servant of the Ushiromiya family, however, as a friend of Kinzo, he is considered part of their group.
Game Board Phase:
Nanjo is able to be the one to confirm the deaths of all victims every turn. (If he is an accomplice, he is able to lie.)

Goat Heads
 
- Characters that do not have meta exclusive abilities exist in the meta phase as goat heads.
- Goat Heads may still debate with the GM on the same grounds as players with meta roles.
- Goat Heads each vote for one character to be included as a sacrifice at the start of the next turn.
- Goat Heads may still vote even if their game-board character is dead.
- All characters with meta abilities become Goat Heads once their character dies.


The Detective
 
There is one detective in every game, everything that is seen and observed by the detective is regarded as absolute and indisputable truth, the detective may be revealed by the GM. The Detective cannot be the true culprit.


The True Culprit
 
There is only one true culprit, this culprit cannot be what the GM claims is the truth. There may be several accomplices, however, they do not commit any of the murders, rather they allow the culprit to commit the murders.


The Riddle of The Epitaph
 
Every game Kinzo's Epitaph is revealed, at the beginning is a bolded riddle that must be solved and sent to the GM explaining what the paragraph is alluding to. In turn Kinzo's ability to guess the next victim will be given to the player in turn for survivng the following turns, the title of "Kinzo" and a clue alluding to one of the murders.


Tips and Tricks:
 
- Do not assume all characters are dead.
- Do not assume that a person = a body.
- Be very specific with your bold truths if you are against the GM, the GM may be very broad with their red truths and there might be ways around what they are saying.
- Ask everyone everything you can, you never know who or when someone is going to die.
- Observe everything with a pinch of salt, do not believe everything you see, you very well may not be the detective.
- Certain characters will refuse to answer to several others, try and get everyone to cooperate in order to recover as much information as possible.
- Put the GM on the spot and make as many bold suggestions as possible.
- Do not assume everything everyone says is telling the truth.

Confusion is well appreciated, all part of the experience of trying something new, trust me I'm not going to plunge you into this thing, despite the selling point I'm more or less going to be walking y'all through this for starters.

Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the debut of the fantasical game that shall last for many years to come: Umineko no Naku Koro Ni!



The curtain rises on the first tale, a re-telling of The Legend of The Golden Witch, and I do encourage your influence involving your roles to transform this into a game of your own and with that, I wish you good luck!

It is October 4 1986, The Ushiromiya family has met once again for their annual family conference. It just so happens that the topic of discussion has been the possible inheritance of the immense wealth gathered by the head "Kinzo Ushiromiya."
Despite the fact the man has been on the brink of death, no sign of his presence has been displayed at this year's conference between his children "Krauss, Eva, Rudolf and Rosa" with their respective partners "Natsuhi, Hideyoshi and Kyrie." alongside their children "Jessica, George, Battler and Maria"
All that was left in place of Kinzo was an epitaph devoted to his formerly beloved, a supposed "witch" that had bestowed upon him 10 tonnes of gold in his possession.

Sleep peacefully, my most beloved witch, Beatrice.
In the same night a letter held by the youthful Maria Ushiromiya is presented when the family, minus Kinzo, settles down for dinner. When asked about where she received the letter, she simply replied: "Uu~! Beatrice!"
All, including the servants "Shannon, Kanon, Gohda, Kumasawa and Genji," denied having given the letter to Maria.

My name is Beatrice, and I serve Kinzo as the alchemic advisor to this family. This service has continued for many years in accordance with our contract. And so, at this point, I must explain a certain portion of this contract to all present.
I, Beatrice, lent Kinzo a great quantity of gold under certain conditions. One is that all of the gold must be returned at the time of the contract's termination. However, Kinzo added a special clause in order to give all of you a chance to retain your wealth and honour. Only upon the fulfilment of that clause will I forever lose my right to collect the gold and interest.

If anyone should discover the hidden gold noted in this contract, Beatrice must abandon all of the aforementioned rights. In other words, if any one of you is able to satisfy this special clause, I will return everything including that which has already been collected. Furthermore, I have taken possession of the Ring of The Ushiromiya Family Head, which symbolizes that the inheritance of the Ushiromiya family has been passed on to another. Please confirm this for yourselves by observing the wax seal. The hiding place for the gold is displayed on the epitaph [written above.] Anyone has the right to discover it. If you can reveal the place where the gold is hidden, I shall return everything. So tonight, please enjoy your battle of wits with Kinzo to the fullest. I sincerely pray this night will turn out to bee both intellectual and elegant.

The heat of the following conversation amongst siblings draws to a close in the midst of neither the dusk nor the dawn of its debate but in the middle of the night when all is silent bar the cries of the victims.

The following morning 6 bodies are discovered by the family. Krauss, Rudolf, Kyrie, Rosa, Gohda and Shannon have been found dead in the garden shed outside of the rose garden. Each body has had its ace horribly smashed in, smeared with blood and/or removed. The only people inside the shed are Hideyoshi, Kanon and Nanjo, the others have refused to enter. There are no adjacent rooms, the only door is the sliding door at the front. The door was locked until the discovery of the corpses and on the door was a painting of a pentacle in red paint.

Before we begin, let it be known that Battler Ushiromiya is the detective of this game.

Yes this is essentially Clue, thank god you're not rolling a dice.
This is more roulette rather than dice.

And instead of there being 1 bullet in a 5 chambered revolver, it's 18 bullets in an 18 chambered revolver.

There are none. The door is currently locked again now that everyone has moved back into the parlour. The windows are locked from the inside but if they were open it would be hard to ENTER but not impossible to leave that way.
