Both shows have different types of humor. Family guy's humor is more of a random/ stupid humor. Simpsons humor actually makes sense in a way. I like family guy more though.

The Simpsons will alwyas be greater because they were the ones who started the whole "cartoons for adults" thing. Also, Family guy did go off the air, you can't forget about that.

Admittedly, The Simpsons isn't nearly as good as it was back in the '90's, but it's still better than a lot of shows, including Family Guy. FG is all about random cutaways and rarely has a solid plot.

Its hard to tell but i say Family Guy, The Simpsons is a great series, and so is Family Guy, but the Family Guys stupidy and randomness conquers ALL

Gamefreak
07-22-2007, 11:49 AM
Family Guy's humor has just gone.....dumb, in lack of a better term. Now, all they do is throw a random reference to a pop culture craze from the 70's or 80's that the show's target audience would not understand and a bunch of fart jokes. I liked Family Guy quite a bit before the series was canceled, but after it came back, it mutated.

Now Simpsons, I haven't watched the latest season, because it too, is becoming less funny. But it at least tries to retain some sophistication in its jokes that Family Guy doesn't.

I think both have kind of outlived their funniness.

The Simpsons movie hype hasn't come to me, mostly because the jokes shown on the trailers don't seem very funny (Lamest one: Homer being hit repeativly between a rock and a hard place joke.)

And...despite Family Guy coming back from cancellation, I think I got bored of it around once half of Season 4 finished.

So...Family Guy because of the random stupidity and pop culture references (South Park clearly demonstrated how many times these pop up), but at the moment I don't feel any urgency whenever it's 8 or 9 PM on Sundays. I'll just play a video game kthanxbai ^^:

simpsons in it's prime was one of the best shows out there but at the moment the newer episodes just don't have the jokes the old ones did (except for the one with a family guy and american dad reference) so maybe i'd choose family guy but if you really pushed me to making a choice i'd have to say FUTURAMA the joke rate is at times unbelievable the geek references are awesome and the characters are hilarious ^_^

Simpsons is good, it's the original, but Family Guy makes me laugh harder so i hav to go with it. But seeing as this is turning into Simpsons v Family Guy v Futurama, i have to point out that Futurama wins hands down out of the three.

07-31-2007, 01:51 PM
Also, Family guy did go off the air, you can't forget about that.
That was entirely the fault of the "genius" FOX executive who thought it was a good idea to move the show around to 80 different time slots. By the time it was canceled, I had no idea when it was airing (and most fans apparently had that same issue). However, when the show was being scheduled consistently (Adult Swim) and made it to DVD, its ratings/sales remained high.

I am a diehard fan of the Simpsons, so the choice for me is obvious.

Granted, we're long past the Golden seasons, but the show still has the occasional good laugh.

Family Guy doesn't overly appeal to me - I find about 80% of the show to be crap. Oh, yes, it has moments that outshine everything else, but overall, it's incoherent and simply filled with people acting retarded.

And it always seem to be that the people you hate always love FG =

Yep that's pretty much when I gave up hope as well. Well that and when they started just dropping in guest stars for no apparent reason.
I'd honestly say overall I prefer Futurama to either, it just seemed to strike the right balance and the jokes managed to poke fun at modern life in a much more subtle way than any other show.

Every series be it South Park, The Simpsons, Family Guy or Futurama has produced some truly classic seasons and individual episodes but it seems like they always end up being victims of their own success and being afraid to take the risks they once did before they became popular. The only exception to this is South Park which after the 3rd or 4th season really started to come into it's own instead of just going for the easy laughs, of course it still has it's cringe worthy toilet humour episodes at times.

Futurama. I don't even care that much about Simpsons or Family Guy anymore; I'll watch either one if it's on but I still go out of my way to watch episodes of Futurama that I've seen 20 times already on Adult Swim.

The Simpsons movie was good, though, largely because it felt like a MOVIE and not an hour-and-a-half episode like I expected it to. Or, say, three separate, mediocre episodes with a disjointed continuity ¬.¬

I loved Family Guy back when it was seasons 1-3, but as of now it just seems to have gone completely to shit. I really think they're cashing in on Stewie way too much now....and the hatred on Meg has never really been as funny as they seem to think it is.

Simpsons at least has a few jokes in it's new episodes that I chuckle at, that aren't just throwbacks to old episodes or things from the 80's. And at least they don't only focus on one character, they can mannage to give screentime to the whole family without bothering with hating one of the members for no reason other than "She's unpopular"

But Futurama trumps them both, Simpsons can make you laugh, but Futurama can really run the gamut on emotions. Episodes like "The Sting", The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings", "Jurrasic Bark", "Luck of the Fryrish" and "Time Keeps on Slippin'" just go to show how deeply detailed the writers are at providing entertainment while touching your heart as well. Family Guy has never made me feel any emotions other then giggles. But Futurama really tends to make you feel for the characters and hope for their success. Which is so rare in a show, but much less a cartoon.

And I also tend to not find jokes that have no substance to the plot or anything else pretty awful. Which may explain why I dislike Family Guy's newer season so much.

I don't really watch Family Guy that much, (though i like it) so i prefer the Simpsons. I haven't gotten a chance to watch the movie though. I'm probably too busy re-watching Futurama. Over and over again. "The Sting" and "Jurrasic Bark" are some of the best emotionaly, like Klank said, but you've just gotta love some of the crazy moments like Leela being impulsive or Fry dating a Lucy Liu robot.

i would say both simpsons and family guy crush futurama, having seen all the futurama episodes im left to think "Will fry and leela ever hook up?"

Family guy is very crude, completely sexist and over the top but its meant to be and it uses random humor, i mean the chicken and peter? Quagmire and his "Giggidey" stewie and brian being able to talk lol and theyre the smartest in the family!
A dog and a baby are more intelligent than an entire family in america lolz

but the simpsons has been going for so many years and its not going to stop anytime soon, based on overall ratings, the simpsons has stood the test of time, and family guy has alot of simpson qualities, its just not as subtle in its humor!

They are both interestingly funny to watch in their own different ways
Homer, mr burns, Duffman, Grandpa, Moe, Bart, Marge,Maggie, Smithers
theyre a crack up!

Stupid dad,
Tryin'a-be-moral-mum
Troublesome boy
Teenage-troubled girl
A dog.

...you can't deny there are parts Family Guy has clearly ripped off from The Simpsons. And some of the plot points that I see on Family Guy made me cringe they were so similar to The Simpsons.

Stewie is ... unique. I like Stewie.

The thing Family Guy does that The Simpsons doesn't is outrageous jokes. Seriously, Jesus, Mother Theresa, ...disabled people... all been ridiculed intensely.

Some say this is pure comedy genious; others that it's a desperate comedy that's had to resort to such jokes.

...The Simpsons always has morals at the end of their stories, which always seems to be key in making a good show or film a good show or film. All Disney (Pixar)'s movies have morals to them -- Cars, Toy Story, Finding Nemo -- and this is what makes them so popular, as well as The Simpsons.

But insane baby who can speak and plans to take over the world: ROFLMFAO. No one can beat that.

Well, between the episodes that rely on you knowing who Disco Stu is and that Comic Book Guy said "Worst episode ever" in that one episode to get any of the jokes, and the ones whose plots are recycled (let's mash the Santa's Little Helper as guard dog and Marge as cop episodes into one! No one will know the difference!) I don't know wtf is going on.

Have I posted in this topic yet? Oh Well I'll go just in case.
I hugely prefer Family Guy even if it is starting to suffer the same fate as The Simpsons with repeating gags. But the Simpsons got old when every week it was just a new guest star with a slightly different plot. Oh and when every other episode had a song, dear god those were annoying as hell.
Ok the characters are similiar but The Simpsons themselves are basically parodied from other shows to make fun of the All American type shows that doinated TV for years.

Honestly for the amount Family Guy gets accused of ripping off The Simpsons, The Simpsons are just as guilty of stealing from every other show now and/or being woefully behind the times. I'm thinking particulary the online gaming episode, which was basically a painfully unfunny and about a year behind South Park doing the same theme 100X better.

Simpsons is the better overall show. Family Guy is meant for that one funny soundbyte that ends up online but lacks in everything else; including but not limited to: orginality, relevant humor, episode to episode plot consistancy. etc

I can see where you are coming with that, but Scrubs plays out in such a way where the extensions or areas where it changes to elaborate on something someone just said. I have three examples of the levels of quality this kind of humor works on:

Perfect: Arrested Development had these kinds of extensions periodically not just to get the joke in but to advance the story by adding sometimes crucial background information in the past events of things thatdirectly involved the family.

Satisfactory: Scrubs while used primarily to get the joke, these break events always involve the relevant character and doesn't forget the show is about is about these people in this hospital.

Poor: Family Guy at almost every instance (thats not fair so I'll just say all of them without exception) of these breaks, is a separation of the plot and often times it's characters aving no relevant addition to the show's theme (another thing A.D. and Scrubs were able to do while making breaks) and of course is simply to get the funny soundbyte to throw in a joke that is just about as lame as the time that Ron Jeremey tried to do Shakespeare (see what I mean).

While there are other programs that demonstrate this way of technique, I believe these forms showcase the varying levels of quality they can have best.

...so as you've probably guessed: I'm hit and miss with Scrubs. I like the parts it does well with (likeable characters, basic story, plot humor) but not the parts where it lacks (unfortunately the kind of stuff I just went over)

DannyLilithborne
10-04-2008, 07:20 AM
The dip in quality became obvious after the animation switched to Film Roman and Conan O'Brien joined the staff. (For the uninitiated, that's way back in season 4). The show stayed good overall though, but there was a definite shift in choice of humor. For people like me who had been fans during season 3 (the show's height), "The Simpsons" became unwatchable around season 11.

truPrince
10-04-2008, 03:05 PM
conan only was credited with Treehouse of Horror IV, Homer Goes to College, Marge vs. the Monorail and New Kid on the Block. (The last three being among some of my personal favorites). But to say you don't like anything past season 11? ones like Lisa the Tree Hugger, Tales from the Public Domain, How I Spent My Strummer Vacation, I Am Furious Yellow, Today I am a Clown, and The President Wore Pearls to name a few. Not a one you enjoyed?"The Simpsons" became unwatchable around season 11.
interestingly enough, The Simpsons has won 9 emmys (nominated for more of course) since season 11 when it became "unwatchable" which (for comparison) is 3 times as many as Family Guy has won in its entire history.

yh but then its down to taste do you prefer to get a joke or to get a joke in a relevent plot line script i just love to laugh so if the joke is funny it wins me over but the critical scene for this point is that one in family guy about scrubs

truPrince
10-10-2008, 01:40 PM
Thats perfectly acceptable because that is your taste in humor. As for me, I can find humor in any of the shows I just listed. However the one I enjoy most and the ones that I enjoy most just happens to be the ones that are funny without as much unnecessary "pulp" so that the attention is paid to the story. Also as seeing that this thread is about the better overall show and not a "who can get the most lols" I still cast my vote for The Simpsons because it can make me laugh just as hard if not harder than Family Guy while remembering that I am there to see how funny the story is, not to appreciate how clever the writers can be when they come up with jokes but don't know where to put them.

DannyLilithborne
10-10-2008, 11:34 PM
Awards mean nothing to me, and Conan O'Brien was a contributing writer which means he contributed to the writing of most episodes even if he wasn't credited. It didn't make me laugh and that's all I care about. In any case, I'm done with this topic.

(P.S. Homer Goes to College and Marge vs. the Monorail are among my least favorite episodes. Fuck the Monorail song.)

I'm going to have to go with Family Guy. It gets criticised a lot of the time due to it's random scenes, though the overall humour of the programme, including these off-topic moments, is hilarious due to the actual style of humour. The Simpsons is very funny, though it's extremely overrated.

Akrog, you be surpised at how many jokes are missed in family guy, I mean there is the open and easy to spot ones, like Hilter...race....etc jokes, but there are quite a few undertoned ones, which have double meaning, as I have not got TV, not seen them in some time, but a good example is one where peter gets sent to a womans camp, to become more senstive to women.

The clear jokes are at sexists and feminism together, however their is an undertoned joke at way society, cannot make its mind up, which it is

They both suck balls now. Simpsons are milking their success and continuing the already prolonged boredem fest it is now. They also add in stupid flashbacks and most episodes include z list celebrities (When you have to say their name and occupation you know they're shit)

On Family Guy it's like Seth doesn't give a shit anymore, he's already content with the big pile of money he has from it and is turning Family Guy into American Dad (which is the worst show ever).

I cant choose because i watch both shows for different reasons. Family guy is good if i just want to blob and watch senseless crap that has no real plot but still some how manages to make me laugh (ps im sick of the chicken fights) But the Simpsons is better for enjoying an actual story line more like a conventional comedy in which you have to have the IQ higher than a child to get half the jokes (unlike family guy) and yes they do have the occasional stale or repetitive show but after 400 and something episodes it's bound to happen. As for south park it's half the time it's funny because the adult population is stupid and half the time its just a way for Trey and Matt to broadcast their political views (which is still quite humorous). I do like the fact that 90% of the Simpsons episodes are real life situations (with the exceptions of Maggie's skills) where as 90% of the family guy would never happen (even if dogs could talk and babies could be evil geniuses). Overall all of the four mentioned cartoons are funny because of the stupidity of the characters.

I was watching season 7 of Family Guy last night. And I was pretty appauled with just HOW much of it was reused gags from past seasons. I mean, there were a few which you were like 'heh, they're doing that thing again" but they just KEPT DOING IT. Like Cool h-whip. And they even yoinked a few gags from American Dad. I enjoy Family Guy, but it's really going downhill... I've always loved The Simpsons though. I don't care if it's not as good as the old stuff, I still adore it.

American Dad spews over both though.

Family guy is, was and will be retarded. it was fun during the fist seasons, but post revival it's just reusing gags and having Brian (seth mcHoweverit'sspelled's author avatar) act as a soapbox. The simpsons are much better, even in their current worn out and decayed state.
It's not fair to compare Futurama, it was very short and had no time to grow old like the other two shows, the early simpsons seasons (around seasons 4-7) were way better.
American dad is quite good currently, maybe because in this one they chose to keep the author on a leash.

Not really. As of now, South Park works with a "Strawman Of The Week" system, with the same jokes used over and over... It has decayed a lot too. The problem with these series is that they start out original, but outlive their normal lifespan, becoming formulaic and repetitive. Furthermore, new series have trouble catching on because they have to compete with these pre-established giants. That is the fate of series like Futurama and God, The Devil And Bob... Ironically, these short lived series are remembered fondly, because they didn't last long enough for them to become boring.

Simpsons. I have watch both shows far more then most people that consider themselves to be fans of either series. Simpsons ever since I was little (back in 1988) and Family guy when it came out. Family guy just lost itself in quality so easily when it came back. Season 4 and over are bad, some of them horrible, and that's not something someone can say lightly for the simpsons. I do admit to the fact that the simpsons has gone down in quality, but family guy spoiled to fast.

The joke set ups are horrible, predictable, and most all are just references not an actual parody. And the cleveland show is even worst (surprised American dad actually works tell truth)

overall unless you are college frat boy or some equal equivalent to that of a frat boy you probably will laugh at family guy for days to come, but when all is said and done, simpsons is the far better, funnier, and overall greater show.

That's quite the generalization thar.

Hmm family guy. Although I will admit both family guy and the simpsons ripped off the family sitcom genre.

Both of them have become pretty terrible, but the Simpsons is ingrained in American culture at this point, and Family Guy crashed WAY harder, so I'll go with the Simpsons.

You know, up until a few months ago I would have said Family Guy.

But recently Family Guy is just plain awful, and i'm just appreciating the Simpsons more. It even makes me laugh occasionally, which is more than I can say for Family Guy.

American Dad is the only Animation Domination show that is ALWAYS funny

Family Guy sucks balls in the last few seasons, don't get me started on the Simpsons, and Cleveland Show is just a lazy excuse to make black jokes

Well I find it stupid for someone to say "it's a lazy excuse to make black jokes" when Family Guy had no problems making black jokes. I also suspect you haven't seen a lot of it since not every episode is made up of black jokes.

Well I find it stupid for someone to say "it's a lazy excuse to make black jokes" when Family Guy had no problems making black jokes.

It's stupid to put words in peoples mouths, I never said every episode is full of nothing but black jokes or that Family Guy never made them, you're reaching for something that isn't there.

I also suspect you haven't seen a lot of it since not every episode is made up of black jokes.

And again you assume wrong, I've seen every episode, and there are a few good ones (Cleveland Jr's Cherry Bomb, Field of Streams, and The Brown Knight come to mind) but the majority are groan inducing

Where does it hint at making nothing but black jokes?

Certainly not in this post

Simpsons had subtle humor which is the best humor. You have to really pay attention to what is going on in the show and the real world as well to get it. Now this is why its always turned away by some people. Because the jokes aren't obvious and they won't get it making the show unappealing to them

Family guy the humor is noticeable so you can tell why some people prefer watching it.
A lot of their humor is best on pop-culture references which to I am a fan of. But, because they show the jokes as a montage(or short clip that turns away from the plot) it just slows it down for me. Sure its only a few seconds, but does Peter always have to make a reference every 3 minutes?

The latest season hasn't had a lot of cutaways lately. Very, very few.
The recent ep. had like one cutaway actually and the 200th ep. is supposed to be incredibly different from the regular FG style.

hm i think the 90s simpsons were boring, i mean bart always ended up apologizing and the stories were predictable

except for one of two golden 90's episodes like
"The sexual harassment one" with the "precious venus" hahah
and "Stark raving dad" where homer accidentally wore a pink shirt to work and ends up in a mental asylum with a fat guy who thinks he is michael jackson
thats great stuff

oh and the evil babysitter lol
the animation was so bad but it was funny

and off course the Who shot mr Burns saga, a rip off of Who shot JR but still funny

other than that i like the 2000 plus episodes

Both shows have lost the nut, but Family Guy pretty much didn't have one to begin with. Gun to my head, have to choose one... Simpsons. At least they were engaging and I actually give a crap about the characters.

But now of days I find American Dad pretty consistently funny. Also, Futurama is getting new episodes, so all of this discussion is going to be null and void soon.

God no.
Their first season really wasn't great. I liked season 2 and really enjoyed three and four and somewhat the fifth season.

A majority fifth and most of the sixth season wasn't that funny.

The current season is great.

Despite others views i find the newer simpsons POST millennium more funny and they keep up to date with the modern trends like Apple computers for example, lol the mapple episode was hilarious and the one where they went to england and saw JK rowling oh and the Curling episode to keep in spirits with the winter olympics, i thought they were funny :D

i do like some of the old 90's ones like where homer gets obese i mean that one is a classic as is the sexual harassment one where he is accused of touching the babysitters butt

the flashback episodes are always good when they go back to when lisa and bart were little or when they go into the future and bart is still a virgin and lisa only has milhouse a possibility of a date ha ha
