Vista isn't THAT bad.
It's true that they made it shiny for the sake of making it shiny, but they update it relatively often so it's not as bad as it was when it was first released.
Plus ever since I added 2 GB of memory to my hard drive, it loads a lot faster for me.

I use Vista... personally I find it to be quite good... it's never played up on me, which is in stark contrast to XP, which always wanted to screw up...
Mind you, I'm not a computer nerd, I don't use Vista to do complicated, computery, backend things... I think the layout is much better than XP and it runs smoother (than the XP I had)...
I use my laptop for uni work, dvds, internet, IMing, photoshop, listening to music, and handling my photography...
In doing all these things, I found XP to be a complete pain in the ass, Vista does all of them perfectly. That's my experience of using Vista for the past year and a half... I have found it to be much, much better than any other previous Windows OS, for what I want it to do.

XP is great, never have to worry about it freezing or not doing something.
Vista's ctrl+alt+delete is a wet tissue compared to XP's, XP's murders programs and tears them a new ****hole when you need it too, vista just gives you this lovely animated circle that makes you think something is happening, and goes 'yeah.. ill make some enquiries and get back to you on that....'

Well if you add 2GB of memory, you add it to your motherboard which is how your computer knows you have 2GB. Your hard drive capacity is also measured in GB but is completely unrelated as that's only used as storage memory as opposed to Random Access Memory.

Vista is fine and you all know it. While it's got it's problems, it's fixed some of the bad points of XP. They've made it all shiny and user friendly for the total computer noobs whilst keeping the ability to do other shit. They only annoying thing is how it's got too much security because people make viruses for Windows and they can't be bothered to make them for the shit that is Apple.
The only reason you people resent Vista so much is because you all fell in love with XP. XP was good because it looked better than the 2000 crap whilst keeping the main qualities of it. That's all XP was, 2000, but looked better and a few extra programs like Movie Maker and PowerPoint chucked in. It's not that I'm in love with Vista or that I completely hate XP, I think they're both good. But don't forget the Vista came later than XP and it was made to be better. And it was. It just got loads of stick because the bug reports when it first came out.

I still like XP better but there are certain features in Vista that I like better then XP. But others that I hate since it seems to be a step backwards to me (eg all the display settings being in different windows instead of different tabs in one window)

I was anti-Vista until I actually used it.
I haven't had any problems with it so far, but I've actually seen the problems others have. The difference is my laptop came with Vista (thus, the manufacturers catered the hardware towards it) while they made an upgrade (and jumped into unexplored territory).
As such, my advice would be to keep XP on the machines you currently have, but welcome Vista when you make a new computer purchase.
Just like with any MS product, there was a rush to get to market and so bugs weren't properly addressed before the release (I'm looking at you X-Box, X-Box 360 and any future MS video game console). When things do get fully worked out, the end of the lifespan of said MS product is reached and overlaps the release of their new product. And the cycle continues.

I got my laptop with Vista installed on it basically the month that it came out and had problems with the computer crasing when I tried to use Media player and a few other applications at the same time, as well as other problems. I have found with the updates that have come out in the time that I have had my laptop have made it more stable to use then when I first got it.
My mum recently bought a laptop that has Vista and has none of the problems with her laptop which I had with mine.

Vista phails! I'm a musician and use Fruityloops on a Dell PC running XP. I decided it was time to have something solely devoted to the cause. I bought a lappy last May for the sole use of using it to make music. After installing the program none of my music files played right. It played out skipped like a record. I contacted Windows to see what their reccomendation was. They said to upgrade my ram. I had 2gb already but I upped it to 4gb. Vista recognized the 4 and I thought I'd be good to go. Nope. Someone tolde me the newest version of Fruityloops worked better on Vista so I got that. My music still would not play. I contacted MS again and what did they tell me? "We're sorry to inform you that no further information has been attained to help you with this problem." Isn't that just like them?
So what have I done a year later? I've wiped Vista off the lappy and put XP on it. =) VISTA PHAILS (and yes I know I should be using a Mac for music)

Yeah, I'm actually rather fond of Vista. It's simplistic, and like someone said, Shiny (which is totally worth it) Having said that, with the minimum amount of required RAM, Vista can be a tad annoying. For example, on my pc (2 gigs) it runs great, and I love Vista. On my laptop (1 gig), it often chokes up and destroys programs, and the memory usage is awful.
So yeah.. if you have the right rig, I don't think it makes a bit of difference whether you're on vista or not. Having said that, the C# runtimes incompatibility can be annoying.

Yeah, I'm a Media and Film student. I have to admit that when using programs such as Photoshop or video editing software, Macs are the one to go for. I mean, they all work as well as they do on my computer as they do on the school macs, but I know that Windows just craps it up the majority of the time.

I have Vista...
My hard drive failed. No virus or anything. First it made it basically inoperable except one or two programs, then while attempting to fix it, I got a blue screen, then after that happened, I did a system recovery in order to fix everything, and it failed after about a week straight, giving me a message that basically said, "Yeah... I don't feel like working any more." I went on the other computer to try and fix THAT, but the only way to fix it didn't work.
I ended up having to mail this thing in to get a new one.
But besides that...
Vista comes with a bunch of crap installed on it. Most of it people just won't use. Normal users will exit out of them asap, smart users will uninstall them, and really, really dumb users probably won't ever even use them anyway despite keeping them on.
I really don't see why they don't just come with the bare minimum.
Also, they should just trash internet explorer and try to convince mozilla to let them come with firefox and not tamper with it.

I use Vista on my laptop and it works great, no probs. Sure it had bugs at first (like XP did only far, far less) but they are gone now. Only problems are the lack of IPX support for ye-old games like diablo and C&C and the memory leach problem with programs that aren't fully compatible.
If MS brought out Vista the way it is now (SP2) then we'd all be saying how it is the best OS of all, instead it seems they've rebadged it and called it '7' in order to charge us more money.
I still don't like how MS made exclusive DX10/11 OS systems though.
I'm running Vista on my Laptop and, well, could be better, could be worse.
I had to reboot it twice and this summer the whole system fricked so badly I had to get it repaired professionally.

I agree. My father, though... he has a newer model laptop than mine (it's an acer, like mine) but less memory... and Vista is a memory hog, big time.
The only gripe I have is that the System Tools have been too badly simplified. I like to see the progress of defragmenting, so i can see whether it's done it properly.

Windows Vista is simply a computer if it wants to it will work wonders for you. My brother's first laptop was a Vista and he had no problems. And nothing had to do with it dieing two years later.
Well, Vista and I when we cross paths become downright ugly towards each other. Sometimes it will work, but that's just some lame decoy. The computer begins to lag, it won't let the internet card sometimes find other website servers, or heck, the internet router has become my computer's favorite toy to mess with.
Oh! Then greatly, it decided to turn on to the blue screen. : D!
I had my gun point. Then Vista decided to shoot itself in the foot.
Eh. Two years of high school to suffer then I'll get a Mac.
Or maybe I'll be lucky to have my Vista laptop die.
Cross my fingers.

I have used XP, Vista and 7 extensively over time... I use PCs with XP at school, my first PC was Vista, and now, I've wiped the HDD and installed 7.
XP is reliable and is reliable, but not spectacular, in my opinion.
Vista wasn't good as it raised system requirements (AHEMgamingAHEM). I use processor and graphic-intensive programs often, so it was rather annoying. Furthermore, the compatibility issues were beyond annoying. Oh, not to mention UAC. In general, it did it's job, but wasn't the best. I received several crashes and BSODs.
On the other hand, though, the UI for Vista looked pretty neat, and new functions which work well are nice. I think the negatives outweigh the positives. Every now and then, it's a pain to use.
I'm finding Windows 7 great. As mentioned on a review site or something (don't remember where), Windows 7 is Vista done correctly. 7 Addresses many of the problems in Vista.
