* This is a remake of the original thread, created due to the first post exceeding the characters' limit. Huge praise to DannyLilithborne for this development, he is practically the second father of this thread! *
So, where to start. After watching the Abridged episodes more times than I can count, and then re-watching them twice that amount, I realised by hanging around the forums that LittleKuriboh makes a ton of cultural references in his episodes, and I had missed quite a lot of them. So I thought that we need a thread to share our findings with the other members so that we can all get the jokes that some might not recognise. Of course that required huge preparation, but after a week or so of hard work, I have finally compiled a list of all cultural refernces of Yu-Gi-Oh The Abridged Series that I could find.I have included the exact second when each of them takes place, although the timing might be a bit off depending on your version of the episode.
This list is not complete and is bound to have mistakes, so it needs your contributions. Please help by filling out any references I missed and completing or correcting ones that already exist (like the reason Rex Raptor referenced Charlie Brown in Episode 29). In the end is a small list of direct references to actual Yu-Gi-Oh episodes. I haven't watched any of those, so your help in them is even more appreciated.
This list will not include references to other Abridged episodes or to 4Kids and their censorships/changes to the Japanese version. And in case you didn't already know, Dan Green is the guy who voices Yugi and Yami in Yu-Gi-Oh.

THE OTHER ABRIDGED MOVIE
[The songs' lyrics are too random to include]
General Note : "Yu-Gi-Oh! Season Zero" is a common fan name for the Toei anime upon which this movie is based, which actually has little connection to the Duel Monsters anime on which the American "Yu-Gi-Oh!" is based. It's not really super violent (it gets that reputation from being an adaptation of the first volume or so of the manga, which is), but it is depressingly bad. The "blue-haired girl" that stalks Yugi is Miho Nosaka, a minor character in the manga and major character in Season Zero. She did not appear at all in the Duel Monsters anime, even during flashbacks of Season Zero where she was originally present.

(00:00) The song playing is "Serhr Oyounik (The Magic in Your Eyes)" by Hossam Ramzy.

*YU-GI-OH EPISODES REFERENCES*
***********************************
[Ep01] The first three lines said by Yugi up to "It's your move" are taken directly from the anime, as are the "What did you do that for?" "So that it could never be used against me!" lines.
[Ep03] Tristan's "If it's any consolation, the sun will come up in a couple of hours" and Mai's "I'll crush you when we get to the island" are direct quotes from the dub.
[Ep05] Tea's line about the robot monkey is a reference to a future episode where Tristan is turned into one.
[Ep05] Mai's line "How could I lose to such an amateur?" is a direct quote of the dub.
[Ep06] Mako's "I am NOT a freaky fish guy" and the Mimic's "You don't stand a ghost of a chance" are direct quotes from the dub.
[Ep08] Tristan's voice indeed changed here in the dub.
[Ep09] Yami Bakura's "I will be a main character, even if it takes me another two hundred bloody episodes" is a rough estimate of how long it takes for the anime to reach the Memory World Arc where Yami Bakura is indeed a main character.
[Ep10] The intro sequence contains a brief frame reading "Jonouchi Bonkotsu Duelist". "Bonkotsu" literally means 'ordinary person' but is often used in the original series by Kaiba to disparage Jonouchi.
[Ep11] Bakura's "Check his pulse, Yugi" is a direct quote form the dub.
[Ep18] Bakura's "Lay a finger on the boy and you mortals will rue the day you were born" is a direct quote from the dub.
[Ep19] Shadi's explanation to Yugi regarding the Shadow Games is a direct quote from the dub.
[Ep26] Mokuba's "What a digital dummy" is a direct quote from the dub.
[Ep26] Mai Valentine's original line was "I don't know which is bigger, his face on the big screen or his ego".
[Ep28] Espa Roba's voice is shouting on purpose, because his dubbed voice shouts every two sentences.
[Ep28] All the Roba brothers have the same voice because that's exactly the case in the dub!
[Ep30] Arkana's quote about the old saying amongst "high rollers and card sharks" is a direct quote from the dub.
[Movie] Pegasus did indeed start off his conversation with Kaiba by offering a hug and a massage. Kaiba telling him he created the God cards and must have created a way to beat them is also taken directly.
[Movie] The prophecy that Grandpa speaks of (and Yugi thinks was written by Dr.Seuss) is taken directly from the movie.
[Movie] Tristan's "I farted; it's funny" is a reference to the film where Joey says "Something stinks" and Tristan responds "That was me; sorry about that" with no expression on his face to indicate the original scene was meant to be humorous. (It wasn't.)
[Final Abridged Episode Ever] Almost all of the dialogue in this episode is directly taken from the dub.

You missed the one in Episode 5 at 3:33 when Joey plays his Time Roulette. The song playing is Time Warp from the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
For episode 4, the text under the title that says, "Our heroes arrive at the island, but soon discover that they are not alone when someone is found to be missing from the flight manifest", seems to be a summary of the first season of Lost...
Also in 4, when Yami says, "I'm back, baby!" That's a quote from many things, including Bender from Futurama and George from Seinfeld.

The title of Episode 4 is a reference to the book "Lord Of The Flies" which makes more sense considering the fact that, like in the book, children and teenager are trapped on an island and they were getting there by boat. other than that it's a very good list.

I noticed one in Seto Kaiba Addresses YouTube that you don't have listed. It's at 1:51. "I don't know what we're yelling about!" is a reference to the movie Anchorman where Brick Tamland says "I don't know what we're yelling about!" And then five seconds later at 1:56, "LOUD NOISES." is also said by Brick Tamland in that movie. Great list though. There's a lot more on this list than I even knew were references in the first place. Good job.

In episode 15, "Card Wars," the intro isnt "Duel of the Fates" from Ep. 1. The song is the Star Wars Theme Song used in the beginning of every movie.
Episode 24, Ishizu makes a reference to the crappy sequal to Yugioh, Yugioh GX, while telling Kaiba his future.
Episode 25, title, taken from the 1987 film, "Dirty Dancing."
1:07, Casanova is a referance to the world famous 18th century writer. A famous womanizer, he is sometimes called the "world's greatest lover."
I'm glad I found this. I knew there was stuff I missed. Mostly, I'm glad to find out about the ending for Episode 11. I could not understand that quote for the longest time, and was wondering, "Did LittleKuriboh suddenly get a lot better at mimicking voices?" O_o
If I notice anything myself, I'll post it here. :3

Ra, this list is as accurate as Wikipedia. The sheer number of errors in here made me register just to post corrections. So here goes:
EPISODE 1: "Filmed before a live studio audience" was more commonly used by 70s sitcoms, not 80s sitcoms. There was a concern at the time about the use of laugh tracks...oh, you had to be there.
EPISODE 3: L'Oreal is a company more noted for hair coloring products than shampoos. The tagline, "L'Oreal. Because I'm worth it" was specifically used to plug their hair coloring.
EPISODE 4: There may have been a book starring Mothra, but it's far better known as a Japanese rubber-suit monster.
EPISODE 5: "My Funny Valentine" is a standard, but it's a show tune, specifically from "Babes In Arms".
EPISODE 6: The song is called "Rock the Boat", by the Hues Corporation.
EPISODE 7: The Blue Screen of Death occurs on Windows systems when there is a fatal error that causes the operating system to crash, not "every time something goes wrong with it." And, yes, on Star Trek, they did have a habit of pressing the same buttons all the time.
EPISODE 8: Joey's card is the Star Wars Kid. Tristan's card is a character from He-Man, not GI Joe. I'm amazed you got Sailor Moon right.
EPISODE 10: "Disco Inferno" by the Trammps, not "The Trammps" by Disco Inferno.
EPISODE 13: Super Mario Brothers originated on the NES/Famicom, not the Game Boy.
EPISODE 14: Yes, the Ben Affleck reference is in there because he starred in Pearl Harbor. The Pearl Harbor reference is in there to point out Bandit Keith's complete obsession with America; he's so deluded that he rewrites history, both real and cinematic, in order to have it conform to his rather limited worldview.
EPISODE 15: You didn't clarify which "Romeo and Juliet" you were talking about. This is Tchaikovsky, not the 1968 movie, which had a popular "Love Theme" of its own.
EPISODE 17: Remington makes electric razors, not razor blades.
EPISODE 20: Specifically, the song playing behind Rebecca is Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells", which was used as the theme for "The Exorcist". And it's spelled "eBay". They get pedantic about that.
I've got a headache, so I'm going to break it off here. May I suggest you double-check and/or redo your research?

I only went up to Episode 20. There are many more errors after that. For instance, Charlie Brown's and Snoopy's comic strip is called "Peanuts", the "Dinsdale" reference isn't explained in re who Spiny Norman is, etc. And I'm sure there will be more in the future, because I'm certain that there's going to be a mistake on where Slifer the Executive Producer's voice came from in Episode 32.
Yes, I am a dick. Here's more proof: if you're doing a column like this, make certain that your references are correct, because when someone calls you out on it and that someone's correct, you look like a complete moron, and you've wasted your work and reputation. You get your facts wrong, and some dick is going to call you out on them. The only thing you can do is take it like a man/woman/Egyptian homosexual.

Since this has come up, the voice of Slifer in Episode 32 is Sinistar, from the game of the same name. Sinistar was voiced by John Doremus.
There's a line that says "Go back to Russia!" involving Bakura, (I don't remember which,) but that's actually a line in a play that I'm doing called The Water Engine. I doubt that it's meant to be a reference, but I found it amusing enough. (Maybe it's the delivery of the line, who knows...)
Jaadowgg
01-24-2009, 05:31 PM
I'm just gonna throw these out here in no particular order:
In episode 11, during Bakura's flashback, Joey not only confuses the card game with Battle Ship, but also with Chess as he exclaims: "Checkmate!"
The actualy title of episode 15 is "Card Wars" an obvious reference to Star Wars.
And since this hasn't come up, yet in the list, Yami saying "Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage" is a line from a song called "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" by The Smashing Pumpkins.
Um... That's all I've got right now. Thanks for making this list of references, it helps out alot.

I made the necessary incorporations, please notify me if anything is wrong. Ditto to Danny "Greatest Benefactor To Humanity Since Dan Green" Lilithborne, if you feel I have made unnecessary/wrong changes please pm me so we can discuss them. I'd hate to think you of all people do not approve of anything I have written.
In unrelated news, I am re-visualising the list now with the new forum, I'll continue when I find more time. It didn't help that the posts' characters limit was significantly reduced but fortunately the extra blank posts paid off. Oh, and episode 32 was just added.
@TheSpie, I really can't find any reason to answer to your rude comments and false assumptions, especially after your unhelpful Slifer comment, but I will use the opportunity to point out for everyone else what I write in the first post, that the list is not complete and is bound to have mistakes. It was created as platform for us all to pool our knowledge and help each other understand the jokes we would otherwise have missed. That's why it needs everyone's help.
@DannyLilithborne and KingofCardGames, I wholeheartedly thank you for your support:)

Thanks for spotting the theme song, mate! I didn't find any reference to this title in the series' episode titles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Cheers_episodes) though.
Added note, for Episode 31, the little kid in the hospital I think had the same voice as Ash from Pokemon, hence the Pokemon references. It would be cool if this turned out to be true, unfortunately I couldn't confirm it as Ash's voice actor in AnimeNewsNetwork is only listed once in Yu-Gi-Oh as playing Chris ("Waking the Dragons").

They also hunt pigs, stab Simon with pointy sticks, and steal poor Piggy's glasses. Personally I think the episode title is meant to reference both Lord of the Rings and Lord of the Flies and not just one or the other. LotF because of the island and such, and LotR because of the magic ring and hobbit reference. xD
If it counts, in episode 26 at around 00:10, Kaiba's lines are similar to those of infomercials. "And that's not all!" xD

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if I'm right the part in Ep. 27 where it explains the missing scene about Tristan punching Joey, the music sounds like the daytime town music in Dragon Quest VIII.
Okay, here's my contribution:
The music playing when it shows the screen saying "Somewhere in Egypt" (i.e. beginning of both episodes of Marik's Evil Council of Doom and near the end of the 2008 Christmas Special), the song is "Serhr Oyounik (The Magic in Your Eyes)" by Hossam Ramzy. Great list! =)

I have watched and rewatched these episodes on my iPhone enough times that I?ve lost count.
I just wanted to toss my hat into the ring and help fill out the already robust references list. A few are some corrections and a few are just additional references that were missing from the list.
Episode 15
* (04:16) Tristan?s line of Star Trek quotes is probably more along the lines of how people will say Trek when talking about Wars and visa versa. Tristan being the moron character makes it more likely that LK is poking fun at people who get the two franchises mixed up.
Episode 21
* (7:!7) More accurately Fable is an Xbox action RPG game that eventually got ported to PC and Mac consoles.
Episode 26
*( 02:49) The training robot in question is named GLaDOS.
Episode 27
* (3:!6) Yes indeed Joey?s mother?s voice is an exact match for Dr. Girlfriend?s voice
Episode 35
*The title is a parody of a Tale of Two Cities. A popular and old book about a prince and a peasant who happen to look exactly a like and trade places at times.
* Yugi?s opening line is a parody of the famous line from the same book, ?It was the best of times it was the worst of times.?
* 3rd Card is ?Buddy Christ? from the Kevin Smith movie ?Dogma? It was supposed to be a redesign of the symbol of the Catholic church to have a happier image than a crucifix. You can actually buy small versions of these online.
* (1:34) Pegasus? line ?I?m in your ....? is a nod to a very common trend of LOLcats expressions. One of the earliest LOLcats had the caption ?im in ur base, killing ur d00ds? Which depending on who you ask is the very first LOLcat ever.
*(01:38) Jar-Jar Binks is widely thought to be the very worst character ever made for the Star Wars universe. He is basically a comic relief character but unlike Tristan he is not ever funny.
*(01:49) ?Exodia go down the hole? is a Parody of the line ?Water go down the hole.? Spoken by Baby Plucky is a short from the animated show Tiny Toons. In the episode it shows an infant Plucky learning that he can flush things down the toilet. He repeats the line many times in the episode flushing numerous items.
* (02:19) ?I?m the goddamn Kaibaman? is actually a quote from a current comic book series written by Frank Millar called All-Star Batman and Robin. In it he has a very mean spirited Batman who says things like ?Im the goddamn Batman.? This version of Batman is not very popular with fans thus the need to poke fun at it.
* (02:52) This is a parody of the infamous Jar-Jar Bink?s line best known from the Episode 1 trailer. This exact line was also parodied in South Park?s Movie Bigger Longer and Uncut.
* (04:04) seems obvious but it is worth noting that this is a reference to how when videogames come out on the Wii they are usually at a much lower quality than those of the PS3 of Xbox360. Usually even worse than the Wii itself is able to handle. They are laughably bad sometime.
*(04:12) ?So beautiful ... they should have sent a poet) is the exact line from the movie Contact.
*(4:40) ?I don?t want to be an American idiot.? Is a line from the song (gasp) American Idiot by Green Day.
* (06:24) ... which itself is a parody of ?We didn?t start the fire?
Episode 36
* The title is a parody of "The Man Who Would Be King" (1888) a short story by Rudyard Kipling.
* Drinking games are basically when you take a shot of your ?alcoholic? beverage of choice whenever a certain phrase or person shows up in a show. There are thousands of them out there for a majority of the tv shows that exist.
*(01:49) ?Bullwinkle voice? The character of Bullwinkle from Rocky and Bullwinkle is a cartoon moose who is indeed how Tristan sounds. It seems that even though Tristan started as a parody of Barney he quickly became more of a Bullwinkle parody.
* (04:14) ?didn?t you see the red light?? and ?Because I?m surrounded by hoes? is a subtle nod to the Red Light districts in some countries that are places one can go to find prostitutes and strippers.
*(4:54) Care Bears was a very cheesy and overly cheery animated show from the 80?s.
*(07:04) seems obvious but... Joey?s yell as he swings on the chain is the common yell of Tarzan as he swings on vines. Only instead of ah the syllables have been replaced with joey?s infamous ?nyeh?.
Episode 37:
* The five cards that scroll across the screen spell D-E-A-T-H.
*(2:49) That woman from the 2007 Transformers movie. They are talking about Megan Fox who did indeed have an over the top fake tan. But she?s so hot that nobody seems to mind.
*(2:51) Shia LaBeouf is the main (male) star of the same Transformers movie.
Cr@psule Monsters 1:
*(04:49): ?I?ll be your friend? is a parody of the Persuasive Detective from the Simpsons episode ?Cape Feare? He says the line in an attempt to get Sideshow Bob to leave town. Making him one of the most memorable of the very minorist of all Simpsons characters.
Cr@psule Monsters 2
* (00:43) They shout Army of Darkness because that is how the main character falls from the sky in Army of Darkness.

Both Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic X and Yugi are voiced in their english dubs by DAN GREEN!

Yugi's : This boy is the Star Wars Kid, a very popular internet meme.

Row 2 - Picture 2 : Sammy Stephens is the owner of Flea Market Montgomery. No idea why he could be Seto Kaiba's father.
I'm guessing, since he's the owner of a Flea Market, it's just irony.

Magnum Farce, a farce is an overdramtic comedy with a never resolved story line
Magnum Farce is obviously a play on the movie Magnum Force, one of the Dirty Harry movies. Though I fail to see the connection to the episode, as there was no Van Dam or ****ing Ninja's
in Magnum Force.
Oprah is a show about a hilarious American known as Oprah
The reference was actually to a famous episode of Oprah, where Tom Cruise was jumping around like an idiot to show how much in love he was, to the point it confused Oprah who became concerned about his antics.

Episode 36, the drinking game is most likely from yu-jyo.net, a popular and very reliable Yugioh sub/dub comparison website. If LK's a big a Yu-Gi-Oh fan as he would have to be to parody the whole series, he would be very familiar with this website.

Here are some corrections to the list you have, just some little things (some pickier than others) that I noticed when I was reading the list...
Ep 24 (04:04) Eternal Darkness is a videogame for the Gamecube. The player takes control of various characters in different time periods.
-It's important to note with this one that the game is most famous for messing with the players mind, it would do things like reverse the controls without any prior warning or pretend that your memory card had been erased.
Ep 27 (01:37) Joey is singing the tune that plays when you find an item in videogame Zelda : The Ocarina of Time. [[I think the item floats too?]]
-Er, yeah. Not just Ocarina of Time, every Zelda game plays that tune, and Link holds the item above his head (it floats in the 3d games but it's just held up in the old 2D games, at least all the ones I've played).
Ep 29 (05:23) The "lame internet references" that Joey is holding include :
...
2nd card : Suiseiseki from Rozen Maiden, the doll that keeps saying "DESU! DESU! DESU! DESU! DESU! DESU!".
- Suiseiseki doesn't *actually* repeat it over and over like this. "desu" is a common ending for a sentence in Japanese, Suiseiseki just tends to overuse it to the point it becomes a bit annoying, and it has since become a meme to post a picture of her with the text "DESU" repeating.
Ep 31 (00:00) "And Now for Something Completely Different" was a spin-off of the popular series "Monty Python's Flying Circus". The title was the catchwphrase of the show.
- Yes, technically, but the name of the spin-off comes from "Monty Python's Flying Circus" itself. The line was used often as a transition between sketches (Wikipedia gives the example "And now for something completely different: a man with a tape recorder up his nose".) many of the episodes used this line to transition into the opening credits, as well.
(02:42) Millhouse is a geek from The Simpsons.
- Also, Millhouse is [not] a meme. Or, so to say, Millhouse is a meme where one person declares that Millhouse is/is not in fact a meme, argument follows.
(04:54) "Caramelldansen" is a Swedish song by the band Caramell and anime characters dancing to it is an internet meme. The song used in it is actually a sped-up version of the tune (known as the "Speedycakes Remix") and the characters used are Mai and Mii of the anime series "Popotan".
-Popotan is an anime, but it's first and foremost a visual novel (read: hentai game). It should also be commented that the internet meme started as a parody of the opening theme of the game version of Popotan using various characters and set to "Carmelldansen" instead of the original Popotan theme music.

Episode 36:
The second card is a Cylon from the remake of battlestar galactica.
Episode 37:
George A. Romero is a director best known for his "... of the Dead" zombie apocalypse movies. His slow moving zombies, that you could kill by destroying the brain, became the guide line of almost all zombie movies that followed. Unfortunately, as he kept putting out sequels they got worse and worse until his latest, Land of the Dead is viewed as the worse zombie movie ever.
28 days later (a 2008 film) broke convention and made their 'zombies': not dead, very fast and called the infected. To fans of classic 'cult' movies they shouldn't even be called Zombies.

For the first 20 or so episodes, it was consistently funny because it poked fun more at the show itself rather than inserting obscure references and memes in place of actual jokes, which is alright once and a while, but eventually the style of humor just got stale.

Looks like the rules... just got screwed.
from CSI
It wasn't from CSI. It was a reference to the character, Lt. Horatio Caine, of C.S.I.: Miami, specifically his largely inappropriate puns based off of how a victim died or any surrounding evidence of that victim's death.

in episode 42 when odion says "I tried my best to serve you, my master. I tried. I tri...ow my face" it seems like a reference to a quote by inigo montoya in the princess bride "I'm sorry father. I tried. I tried."

I dont think this has been mentioned yet (if it has then sorry)
Ep 41, while the music is playing Marik says
"these are going straight on to my nipples.. Ha Ha.. Ice cube fetish"
that's a reference to Phil Sebben on Harvey Birdman who uses similar sentences frequently such as
"If you not careful you will get us all whacked.. Ha Ha.. Body in a wood chipper"
Black Mage

Adventurer, you foolish little fool.
Error found in episode 8... yeah I think its 8.
Black mage is from FF1, and 8 bit theater, however yugi said "The dark magician" refering the "The" to the card, there is more than one version of The dark magician, be it "Dark Magician girl" or steves version of it.
What that means is yugi was refering to the FF1 ver. and not the 8-bit theater character named "Black Mage Evilwizardington".

Episode 44:
What Duke states about "unconscious chicks" not being able to say no may or may not be seen as a reference to Kill Bill.
urgh.
Marik: "Sorry Marik, but your sister is in another castle.": Super Mario Land I (Game Boy)
btw, does anyone know the title of the the song that plays in episode 29 (Not so super Roba Bros.) during the Epic Mokuba Manoeuvre? XD
I know it, but my brain just won't spit out the name.

Another of the cards that pass by Yami Yugi at the beginning was Salacious B. Crumb, a Kowakian Monkey-Lizard from Star Wars.
Oh, and when Yami Bakura is eating the steak, he sounds just like the Cookie Monster of Sesame Street. I don't know if that was intended or not.
Hah, I was right! The "om nom nom" did originate with the cookie monster. Suck it, MoFos.

Er... I got more info from the Rolling Stones 500 greatest songs and Wikipedia. (I was just looking for the next new song to buy, then stumbled upon this to see if it was the same song.)
It made by Ben E. King first in 1961, 14 years before John Lennon covered it. It was also number 121 on that list, and the song later inspired the film under the same name 25 years later.

If I may add on DANMAN to 47,
Beginning: Nick Simmons: See " Bleach Plagiarism".
Cards: Ash Ketchum and Pikachu (Pokemon), ??? (someone from Shaman King?), Chris (Sonic X), ???, Luffy (One Piece)
Noah's references were: Star Trek, The Outer Limits, and Wizard of Oz.
The sound of Noah appearing on and off the monitor was the sound effect from Star Fox 64 when receiving a message.
"I WAS FROZEN TODAY!" was from Christopher Llyod, btw, not Walken.

Penguin Ex Machina is most likely a play off of "Deux Ex Machina", meaning "God in the Machine", a convention in literature and film basically that serves as an unexpected last-ditch cavalry coming to save the day when all else looks lost. In this case, Tea's savior was a penguin.
Mokuba stinger is based off Howard Dean's infamous speech during his campaign.

When Noah makes his "truth" speech in Episode 48, I'm reminded very much of Franziska von Karma's obsession with the word "fool" (from the Ace Attorney/Gyakuten Saiban series).
